Ivan the terrible was born on August 25, 1530. He crowned himself Tsar at the young age of 16. By the age of 17 he had completely taken control of the Russian government. He was the first to assume the title of Tsar. Ivan was only at the age of 3 when his father died. Ivan he hand picked 6,000 guards who soon became his own secret police called the Oprichniki. The killing of Ivan’s son was a tragic accident. When Ivan beat his daughter in law for dressing inappropriately which led to a miss carriage, his son got very angry with him but Ivan fought back and accidently killed him by hitting him to hard in the head with his staff. Ivan was a very religious man following the Christian religion. Sometimes he would wake very early in the morning just to get a few hours of prayer in. if a priest ever spoke out against him he would order for them to be burned alive. Ivan ran many military campaigns one against over taking the Baltic’s. Ivan was also responsible for the building of the St. Basils Cathedral. Ivan the terrible was also known as Ivan the IV or Ivan Grozny. He had a very violent and unpredictable nature. He was born in the town of Kolomenskoye, near Moscow. He gained vast amounts of land during his rain. In February 1547 Ivan married. Ivan died on March 18, 1584.
